Knot Tying

Tying knots is not only a useful asset for securing loads on your next camping trip it also helps maintain an old art. We hope to inspire you to learn more about knot tying with our special deck of playing cards. Learning how to tie knots correctly can take the guess work out of setting up camp, making a tow line, securing a load, holding livestock safely, or just finding a better way to suspend an object safely. Knot Playing Cards can easily be stowed away in a vehicle glove box or any packing gear for reference and entertainment on your next outdoor adventure.

Knot tying is generally defined in three categories:

  • Knot - Tie made in one or both ends.
  • Hitch - Attach rope to post, rail or ring.
  • Bend - Join two ropes together.

When referring to knot tying instructions on our face cards you may run into some unfamiliar terminology. The diagram below illustrates the different parts of a knot.

When tying knots it is important to remember safety. Knot Playing Cards briefly describe possible uses for different knots, but it is important to refer to technical reading for safe usage. Some synthetic ropes are slick and less secure as some knots reduce rope strength over half its rating. Rope size also makes a difference, double the rope diameter and get about four times the strength. For more information about knots and tying practices see our suggested reading list on an information card in each deck.
